Site selection criteria for a dairy farm

How to select a site for dairy farm?  Or what are the major point those should be considered before selecting a site for dairy farm   ?      
     

Many people want to start a dairy farm but cannot understand how should the location for dairy farming. Which type of land, location and climate is better for dairy farming?   To start a dairy farm,  site selection is most important point. Because, if the location, climate and breed are not matched farmers will not get  proper  production  and can not become successful. So, at first farmers should give attention on site selection criteria . In this article, site selection criteria are described in details.

1. Soil type
Foundation soil  of farm should be sandy loam. This type of soil keep the farm clean and dry. During rainy season sandy loam soil absorb water easily. This soil prevent the formation of crack and fissure near the foundation
Soil should be fertile to cultivate good yield fodder
Soil condition should not be too moist or dry.

2. Topography and drainage system
Shed and others  house of dairy farm  should be higher elevated than the surrounding ground for effective drainage of waste and rain water, to keep clean surrounding and free from bad odour. The topography should be somewhat levelled. Levelled land require less  cost for fitting soil and building house.

3. Exposure of floor to sunlight
It should be considered to build shed that the floor get proper sunlight which keep the floor dry, prevent germs growth, removes dampness, facilitate the worker, increase the growth rate of fodder production, keep animal healthy. To get better sunlight at platforms, gutter, manger the shed should be set in North-south direction.

4. Protected from wind
The place and house should be in proper condition so that no direct hot and cold wind can heat at farm. It prevent the fluctuation of body temperature of animal and contamination of milk during milking at milking shed.

5. Accessibility
Dairy farm should be placed about 100 meter away form main road for easy accessibility. If the farm located near main road  it is easy to marketing and quick disposal. Transport Cost also minimize.

6. Durability and activeness
The dairy house should be placed on the place where a scenic view is present. As a result, the farm looks neat and clean always. The house should be long time  lasting.

7. Water supply
Water is an important nutrient for all living being. It is essential for metabolic reaction.  Fresh water is required  both animal feeding and fodder production So, In the dairy cattle farm fresh water supplement source must be considered before selecting a site.

8. Electricity
Electricity is a significant element of our daily life. we can not think a moment without electricity. In a dairy farm, to regulate light, fan, motor, computer, milking  machines, and others machines noiselessly or without pollution, to minimize the work of labour, quick function electricity must be needed. So before selection of site you should think the availability of electricity

9. Market
Market must be available near the dairy farm  for easy buying of raw materials, easy disposal of products, Reduce the cost of transportation, storage and refrigeration, easy to sale milk.

10. Surrounding
The surrounding environment of dairy farm should be clean and safe to prevent theft and attacking from wild animal. Otherwise,  the farmer may fall in economic losses.


11. Labour
A plenty of skilled, reliable, cheaper, honest, laborious regular labour must be needed for a dairy farm . Those characters remaining labour can provide better care to animal,  better quality work, better efficiency. They handle all machines carefully as a result, machine become long lasting, farmers get a higher return and rapidly be successful economically.
12. Others
Availability of Bank, School-college, post office, shopping malls etc.  so that the farmers and all employees can easy banking, to send their children in school & College, contact with public, easily can buy their food, cloth and others necessary products.
